Two things are worth saying, and the first is genuinely good: machine washable on a dress at this price is unusual and valuable, and organic cotton is a real selling point rather than a vague one. The second is that those two good things sit awkwardly with each other, and it is worth being straight about why. A shirred bodice is held together with rows of elastic thread, and elastic does not enjoy being tumbled and spun: it loses its tension and it breaks. A 100% cotton poplin, meanwhile, will shrink in a machine wash unless it has been pre shrunk properly. The published size 2 gives a 23 inch bust and a 23 inch waist against a model with a 34 inch bust, which is about eleven inches of negative ease. The shirred bodice is the mechanism, because shirring contracts and expands over a range of inches, so this is not simply a misprint the way some we have flagged have been. But eleven inches is more than shirring gives alone, so we would measure a sample. The hip at 48 inches against the model's 36 inches tells you the other half of the shape: a close bodice above a very full skirt, which is exactly what a fit and flare is.

Machine washable against shirring and shrinkage is the first thing. This garment is held together at the top by rows of elastic thread gathered into the cloth, and it is made of cotton that has not been blended with anything. Machine washing attacks both: agitation and spinning break down elastic over time and the heat of a tumble dryer finishes it off, while cotton that has not been pre shrunk properly will shrink in the first wash and take the length of the dress with it. The instruction is not wrong, it is just the one that ages this garment fastest. Our answer is not to change it to hand wash, which would make the dress worse to own. It is to specify the elastic properly, to pre shrink the cloth, and to test the garment through repeated washes rather than through one. A dress that survives ten washes is worth more to your customer than one that survives one beautifully.

The shirred bodice is the second, and it is the reason this dress can exist at all. Cotton poplin has no stretch fibre in it, and a bodice that fits closely cannot be made from a cloth with no give, unless the give comes from the construction instead. Shirring does that: rows of elastic let the bodice contract onto the wearer and expand as needed, so one size covers a range of bodies rather than one. That is worth saying on your page, because it reduces returns. It is also worth knowing what goes wrong, and it is the same two things every time: the elastic goes slack, and if the shirring is sewn with too heavy a needle the thread breaks as the panel stretches. We specify the elastic, we test how much the panel gives, and we test it again after washing rather than only when it is new.

That said, unlined and in a strong colour, we would still test opacity on the finished garment rather than on a swatch, because a bright red can surprise you in daylight.
