Production and Quality Control

We would start where the customers did. This listing has a rating of 2.5 from eight reviews, and six of those reviews have written text, which is unusual and valuable. Rather than quote the score and move on, here is what people actually said, because every one of these is fixable and none of them is about sizing: one said the dress is totally transparent and the material feels very cheap and she returned it the same day; one said the bottom hem is super tight and restricts how you walk, and the material is cheap and completely see through; one said the material feels very cheap and the fit is strange, very tight around the hips and super loose up top; one said nice style and fit, just a shame it is so transparent, she did not expect that; one said she received a banana coloured dress with poor stitching and fabric that is completely see through. The sixth liked it but found the arms too long and the top billowing on her, and described the open back jutting out at the sides where it meets the waistband.

Sheerness is the first thing, and it is not a marginal complaint. Four of the six written reviews raise it, and two of them use the word completely. An unlined ivory jersey is the combination most likely to do this, and matte jersey at this weight is not opaque. The telling detail is that the reviewer who otherwise liked the dress still raised it, and said she did not expect it. That is the whole problem in one sentence: the customer was not told. We would put the weight and the finish of this cloth at the top of the decisions rather than treating it as a specification detail.

The hem, the proportion and the open back construction are the third, and all three are pattern problems rather than fabric problems. The hem is the clearest: a maxi that is too narrow at the bottom cannot be walked in, and one reviewer said exactly that. That is a measurement, it can be specified, and the fix is a wider hem or an opening, not a different size. On proportion, tight at the hips and loose on top, with another reviewer describing the top as billowing: that is a garment where the balance between the two halves is wrong, and it is fixed on the stand rather than in the cloth.
