There is a problem with the published measurements that we would not work from, and it is worth saying exactly what it is, because it is a different kind of problem from the ones we usually flag. The size S gives a 30 inch bust, a 22 inch waist and a 25 inch hip. A hip measurement smaller than the bust is not how bodies are shaped, and 25 inches against a model with 34 inch hips is nine inches of negative ease in a cloth that has no stretch fibre in it at all. We do not think this row describes the garment. The rest of the garment is worth taking seriously though, and the partial front zip in particular raises the same question we have raised elsewhere: a zip does not stretch and a knit does. The hip measurement is the first thing. The size S publishes a 30 inch bust, a 22 inch waist and a 25 inch hip. Putting the small numbers aside for a moment, the shape itself is wrong: hips are not smaller than busts on a body, and a dress cut that way would be tighter across the seat than across the chest. Add the model, who has 34 inch hips, and that is nine inches of negative ease in a knit made of cotton and silk with no elastane at all. Cotton silk knit has some give from the knit structure, but not nine inches of it and not without staying stretched. Our reading is that this row is not usable. It is worth being clear about why that matters: grading from an unreliable chart does not put the error in one size, it multiplies it across every size you make, so a bad starting row is more expensive than no row at all. We would measure a sample.

A zip in a knit is the second, and it is the same problem we have flagged on other garments in this series, because it comes up whenever two materials with different behaviour are sewn together. A zip does not stretch and a knit does. Sew a rigid zip into a close fitting knit and the knit will pull away from it in waves, the zip will buckle rather than lying flat, and the whole front will ripple instead of sitting clean. It is very visible on a bodycon, because there is nowhere for the ripple to go. The answer is to stabilise the zip path with a tape or a facing so the knit is held flat along it, and to choose a zip that is light enough not to drag the knit down. We would also decide how far the zip runs, because a partial zip that stops partway is the hardest version of this: the point where it stops is exactly where the strain concentrates.

The cotton silk blend, the patch pockets and the care are the third. 90% cotton with 10% silk is an unusual and rather good combination: the cotton gives body and the silk gives a slight sheen and a softer handle. But the two fibres shrink differently and they take dye differently, so the cloth has to be finished carefully or it will go uneven. Dry clean is stated, which is sensible for that reason. On the pockets: patch pockets sit on the outside of the garment, and on a bodycon they sit on the hip and the thigh where the fit is closest, so they will push out and they will interrupt the line. It is not a defect, it is what patch pockets do, but it is worth knowing before you choose them over pockets set into the seam.
