The halter tie is the first thing, and it is the part of this garment that decides whether it gets worn more than once. A tie closure at the back of the neck slips: it loosens as the wearer moves, it comes untied, and it has to be retied, which on a dress with no structure means the whole front drops. There is no zip here and no boning, so the knot is the only thing holding the garment up. Three options, and you choose: keep the tie but make it wider so it grips and does not dig in, use an adjustable slider so it stays where it is set, or replace it with a fixed band and a clasp, which is the most reliable and the least romantic. We would raise this before sampling rather than after the first return, because it is invisible in a photograph and obvious after an hour.

Silk chiffon and the lining are the second. Silk chiffon is beautiful and it is difficult: it is slippery to cut, it frays, it shows every handling mark, and it is transparent unless it is lined. The full lining here is the right decision and we would keep it, but it changes the garment, because a lined chiffon hangs and moves differently from an unlined one and it is warmer. We would specify the lining cloth rather than leave it to the factory, and we would test how the two cloths move together rather than separately. Being straight about the care instruction: dry clean only is standard for silk, but it is worth knowing that repeated dry cleaning dulls silk and takes the life out of chiffon, so this is a garment that will not look the same after a season of cleaning as it did new.

The stripe and the layers are the third. A striped garment that is also layered has one problem that a plain one does not: the stripes have to line up across the layers, or they have to be deliberately offset, and either decision has to be made before cutting rather than discovered on the finished dress.
