Stretch silk is the first thing, and it is a genuine trade rather than an upgrade. The upside is real: 7% elastane makes a silk dress forgiving, it moves with the wearer, and it will fit across a wider range of bodies than the same dress in plain silk, which is why it is worth doing. The other side is that elastane has a shorter life than silk. It loses its recovery over time, it is damaged by heat in pressing, and some cleaning affects it, so on a dry clean only garment the elastane is the part that will age before the silk does. We test recovery after repeated cleaning rather than only on the first sample, we press at a controlled temperature rather than hot, and we tell you the honest version: this is a dress with a good few years in it rather than a lifetime one, and that is a reasonable exchange for how it fits.
The two cloths are the second. The shell is silk with elastane and the trim is viscose, and those two shrink differently, so the chiffon trim will pucker along the edge if it is not tested against the shell. Chiffon is also the more fragile of the two, being lighter and more open, and it is at the edge of the garment where it gets the most handling. We test the two together, finish the chiffon edge rather than leaving it raw, and check it after cleaning.
The print and the lining are the third.
