Two things matter more than the numbers on a bustier dress. The cup size and the body size are two separate things and they do not move together, so a bustier has to be fitted on the bust rather than graded from a bust measurement alone. The two cloths are the first thing. The shell is 100% viscose and the lining is 100% polyester, and those two shrink by very different amounts. Sewn together as a full lining, the lining will pull the shell out of shape the first time the garment gets any moisture, and on a satin the result is visible as puckering at the seams and a hem that no longer hangs level. Viscose is also weak when wet, so the instruction matters. We would test shrinkage on both cloths before cutting, compensate the pattern, and check that shell and lining behave rather than assuming they do because they came from the same order.
The underwire cups are the second. An underwire in a dress has to be held in a channel that is tight enough that the wire cannot rotate or work its way out, and loose enough that it can be removed if the customer wants to, because a wire that has come through the fabric is the single most common failure of this garment type and it is also the one that gets returned as faulty rather than repaired. Unpadded means the wire is doing all the shaping on its own, which is a stronger look and a less forgiving fit. We set the wire length and the channel width in the tech pack rather than leaving it to the line, and we test the cup through the care cycle.
The trim, the straps and the zip are the third. Picot edging is a fine finish that frays and curls if it is not set properly, and it is the most visible edge on the garment. Convertible straps mean hardware, and that hardware carries load at the point where the dress is most likely to be adjusted, so it has to be tested for strength and for how it behaves in cleaning. The concealed side zip runs right past the cup, which is the awkward part: it has to close without distorting the cup and without catching the lining.
