The bodice is the whole garment. A boned bustier on a strapless gown has to hold itself up and hold its shape, and it is doing that on a plisse fabric, which is pleated and therefore springy and difficult to control, so the boning and the plisse are working against each other unless they are engineered together. The pleated chiffon skirt is the other half, and the thing to get right there is that the pleats have to be set so they survive cleaning rather than falling out the first time the dress is pressed. The reference publishes one row, size S at bust 30 in, waist 26 in, hips 34 in and length 54 in, and it is one of the more coherent rows in this batch, reading as body measurements with a little ease. It is still one row on a 178 cm model, so it says nothing about grading. Our grade below is a proposal, and on a boned bustier the sizing follows the bust and the underbust rather than a single bust measurement, so we would develop the bodice in a fitting rather than grade it from one row.

Production and Quality Control

There are no customer reviews on this listing, so there is no score to quote and no complaint pattern to read. We plan from construction, and a boned bustier gown in plisse with a pleated skirt has three things that decide whether it works.

The boning is the first and the one that decides whether the gown can be worn at all. A strapless bodice has nothing to hold it up, so the boning is carrying the whole job, and it has to be specified properly: the type of bone, its length, how many, and how the channel holds it, because a bone that works through the cloth or pokes out at the end is worse than none at all. Bones also have to be placed consistently across sizes rather than scaled with the pattern, which is how a bodice fits well on the sample size and badly at the ends of the range. We specify the bones as components, test them after the care cycle and after packing, since a bone that arrives bent cannot be fixed, and test the bodice on real bodies rather than on a form.

Plisse and the pleats are the second. Plisse is already pleated, which means it has spring and it does not behave like a flat cloth, so cutting and sewing it needs the right tension and the right seam or the pleats will pull out at the seam line. The chiffon skirt pleats are a separate job again: pleats have to be set so they survive cleaning and pressing rather than falling out the first time the dress is touched, and they have to hang evenly all the way round rather than spreading at the sides. We develop both on the actual cloth, test after the care cycle, and check the pleats hanging rather than pressed flat on a table.

Rayon with nylon is the third. Rayon is weak when wet, it creases and it shrinks, and 17% nylon helps but is not a substitute for controlling the cloth. We test shrinkage and recovery before bulk cutting and compensate the pattern rather than hoping, and we check the shell and the lining behave alike in cleaning or the gown will twist. The hidden zip runs through shell and lining, both slippery, and has to go in without puckering, and the hem on a pleated gown has to be even rather than dipped.
