Rib recovery is the first and the one that separates a garment that lasts from one that does not. A rib gets its stretch from its structure rather than from elastane, which is why 100% cotton can still fit close, and it also means that if the rib is knitted loosely or the yarn is poor, it will stretch out and stay stretched. That failure shows at the elbows, the waist and the hem, and it appears after a few wears rather than at inspection, which is what makes it expensive. We specify the gauge and the yarn rather than just the fibre, test recovery rather than just stretch, and check the garment after wearing and washing cycles rather than only off the machine.
The exposed zip on rib is the second. Rib moves, and a zip does not, so sewing the two together is a real difficulty: any unevenness in the seam shows as a wave down the front of the dress, and the zip also stops the front from stretching, which changes how the garment fits. We specify the zip type and length, use the right stabiliser rather than hoping the operator gets it straight, and test the zip through repeated opening and closing on the actual rib. Being straight about the trade off: an exposed zip looks sharper and limits the stretch, so if you want the dress to pull on and stretch, buttons or no closure is the honest alternative.
Cotton and the making are the third. Cotton shrinks, and a rib shrinks differently lengthwise and widthwise, so we test shrinkage on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern rather than hoping. The collar has to hold its shape after cleaning rather than curling, which is a question of interlining and pressing rather than of fabric, and the hem on a rib has to be sewn with a stitch that stretches with it or it will pop.
