The reference publishes one row, size 2 at bust 30 in, waist 32 in, hips 40 in and length 53 in, and we would not build your chart from it. A 30 in bust with a 32 in waist is not a body measurement, and the most likely reading is a flat measurement across a structured bodice. The length, 53 in, is the usable figure. Our grade below is a proposal, and on a boned strapless bodice the sizing follows the bust and the underbust rather than a single bust measurement, so we would develop the bodice in a fitting rather than grade it from one row.

Production and Quality Control

There are no customer reviews on this listing, so there is no score to quote and no complaint pattern to read. We plan from construction, and a boned strapless silk dress has three places where it either works or fails.

The boning is the first and the one that decides whether the dress can be worn at all. A strapless bodice in silk has nothing to hold it up, and silk has no give, so the boning is carrying the whole job. It has to be specified properly: the type of bone, its length, how many, and critically how the channel holds it, because a bone that works through the cloth or pokes out at the end is worse than no boning at all. Bones also have to be placed consistently across sizes rather than scaled with the pattern, which is how a strapless bodice fits well on the sample size and badly at the ends of the range. We specify the bones as components, test them after the care cycle and after packing, since a bone that arrives bent cannot be fixed, and test the bodice on real bodies rather than on a form.

Silk weft satin is the second. Weft satin is the weave that gives silk its lustre and it is also the most unforgiving version of it: it marks with water, it creases, it shows every handling mark, and seams in it will pucker if the tension is wrong. Silk itself has no stretch, so a close-fitting bodice has to be cut correctly rather than eased into place, and it loses strength when wet. We specify the momme and the weave rather than just the fibre, use the right needles and threads, test seam slippage, colour fastness and shrinkage, and test the garment through the care cycle rather than only looking at it off the machine.

The partial lining and the split hem are the third. A lining at 88% polyamide with 12% elastane gives where the silk does not, which is a sensible pairing, but the transition from lined to unlined has to be finished properly or it will show as a line across the skirt, and the two cloths have to behave alike in cleaning or the dress will twist. The split hem has to hang closed standing and open walking, which means it is cut and pressed rather than just slashed, and the top of the split is a stress point that tears if it is not reinforced. We specify where the lining starts and stops, reinforce the split, check the hem hanging rather than on a table, and test the zip through both shell and lining without puckering.
