The voile and the lining together are the first. Voile is fine, open and semi-transparent, and a full lining is what makes the dress wearable, but two layers that do not behave the same way will fight each other: if the shell shrinks more than the lining, or the other way round, the dress will twist and the hem will go uneven. That is one of the most common faults in a lined woven dress and it only shows after washing. We test shrinkage on both cloths, match their behaviour before bulk cutting, and check the garment after the care cycle rather than only on the finished sample. We also check the lining does not peek at the hem or roll at the armholes.

The pintucks are the second. They look like decoration and are actually a construction risk: pintucks have to be even and consistent, or the dress reads as badly made, and on a fine cloth they will pucker if the tension or the thread is wrong. They also have to be placed consistently across sizes rather than scaled, because pintucks that are correct on a sample size will be wrong on the largest. We set the width and spacing as measurements, test them after washing, and check them across the size range.

The waist tie is the third. It has to hold once tied and be anchored, or it will work loose through the day and the dress will lose the only shaping it has, and the ends have to be finished so they do not fray. Because it is adjustable, the channels or loops it runs through have to be reinforced, since they take the strain every time it is pulled. We test tying and untying repeatedly, check the tie does not rub a mark in the cloth, and confirm it after the care cycle.
