The reference publishes one row, size S/M at bust 22 in, waist 23 in, hips 29 in and length 59 in, and we would not build your chart from it. Those are not body measurements, and the most likely explanation is flat measurements on a high-stretch knit, which makes them close to unreadable as published. The length, 59 in, is the usable figure. Our grade below is a proposal, and on a cloth with 23% elastane the right way to specify fit is by stretch range rather than by circumference, which is what we would measure and record. The three-size scale works because the elastane does the fitting; conventional single sizes would mean re-blocking rather than splitting this one.

Production and Quality Control

There are no customer reviews on this listing, so there is no score to quote and no complaint pattern to read. We plan from construction, and this gown has four things that have to be right.

The halter and the open back are the first. All the weight of a floor-length gown hangs from the neck, and with an open back there is nothing behind to help hold it, so the halter attachment is carrying everything. On a knit that stretches, the straps will stretch at exactly the point where stretching is most visible, which is why a halter gown either holds or slowly slides down over an evening. We reinforce the attachment, set the strap width to carry the weight comfortably, and test the neckline under movement and after wear rather than only on the first fitting. The button and loop closure has to be sized and backed so it does not pull out.

The built-in bodysuit is the second. It is what makes the halter behave, and it is also the part that decides whether anyone can actually wear the dress for a full evening: getting in and out of a bodysuit under an open-backed gown, and using a bathroom in it, is the thing customers complain about without ever putting it in a review. We specify the gusset and its fastening, test dressing and wearing rather than only standing, and check the base does not print through the outer layer or cut in at the leg.

The shoulder flower is the third. A three-dimensional detail has to hold its shape through wear, washing and packing, and a flower that arrives flattened or that loses its form after the first clean is worse than no flower. We set how it is made and supported, test it after the care cycle and after packing, and check it does not pull the shoulder out of shape or scratch where it meets the skin.

Twenty-three percent elastane is the fourth. It is what makes the whole thing work and the most likely thing to fail: cheap elastane loses its return, and then the halter stops holding and the gown bags. We specify the yarn and the elastane brand rather than accepting a substitute, and we test recovery after washing and after wear, not only on the hanger. Because it is only partially lined, opacity is checked in the colourway you run, seams are specified so they stretch with the cloth, and every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
