The reference publishes one row, size S at bust 31 in, waist 32 in and hip 36 in, and it is worth noting what it says: the waist is wider than the bust, which for a slip means the shape is cut straight rather than fitted at the waist, and that is a deliberate slip shape rather than a mistake. It is still one row on a 178 cm model, so it tells us nothing about grading. The length, 30 in, is the usable figure and it is very short. Our grade below is a proposal to be confirmed on a sample, and with adjustable straps the fit is set at the bust and the strap length rather than at the waist, so that is where we would fit it.

Production and Quality Control

There are no customer reviews on this listing, so there is no score to quote and no complaint pattern to read. We plan from construction, and a silk slip with a button placket has three places where it either works or does not.

The button placket is the first, and it is the reason to make this dress rather than a plain slip. A placket down the front of a lightweight silk has to be reinforced or it will pucker and pull between the buttons, and buttons spaced wrongly will let the placket gape, which on a close-fitting garment is visible and cannot be fixed by the wearer. We back and reinforce the placket, set the button spacing on the body rather than from a pattern, and test it after the care cycle rather than only on the finished sample. We also check the buttons do not create a ridge that shows through the silk and that the buttonholes do not stretch out.

The lace trim is the second. Lemon against black is a strong contrast, so any poor joining shows immediately: the lace has to be joined rather than topstitched, the edges finished so they do not curl or fray, and the scallops set evenly rather than wherever they land. We plan the placement, test colour fastness of the lace and the ground together, since a light lace on a dark ground that bleeds in the first clean is unrecoverable, and check the lace does not scratch, because it sits against the skin.

Silk is the third. It is weak when wet, it can water spot, it creases, it snags, and its seams can slip under strain, and all of that is worse in a lightweight cloth with no elastane to help it recover. We relax the cloth before cutting, test seam slippage and snag resistance, and test pressing as a process, since a hard iron will shine silk. The adjustable straps are the only fit tolerance the dress has, so the sliders have to hold once set or the dress will slide down and the customer will read that as bad sizing, and the attachment points need reinforcing because they carry the garment.
