The reference publishes one row, size 1/S at bust 38 in, waist 42 in, hips 50 in and length 37 in. Those are not body measurements, and the shape explains why: on a lantern dress the waist and the hip are the fullest part of the garment, so these read as garment measurements of a deliberately full skirt rather than as the body it fits. That makes them useless for writing a size guide and useful for understanding the shape, and we would treat them that way. Length, 37 in on a 182 cm model, is the number we would anchor to, and it is worth noting that a mini measured on a model this tall will sit longer on most customers. The lantern shape is the first. It is not a gathered skirt: the volume is cut into the panels so the skirt swells and then returns at the hem, and if the pattern is not right the skirt either hangs straight or balloons. We develop the shape in the pattern rather than by gathering more fabric, and we check it on the body rather than on a hanger, because the whole effect depends on how it falls when it is worn. The hem has to be even all the way round and has to sit back in towards the body rather than flaring out.

The elasticated straps are the second, and they are doing the entire fit system here because there is no zip. Elastic in a strap loses its return the same way elastic in a waist does, and when it does the dress slides down and the customer reads it as bad sizing. We specify the elastic, test that the straps hold their position in wear rather than only on the first fitting, and check the attachment is strong enough and comfortable enough not to dig. We also test that the bodice stays put with the straps both on the shoulder and worn off it.

Cotton voile is the third. It is fine, it is pale under a print, and it can be more transparent than a swatch suggests, so we check opacity in the actual colourway and confirm whether partial lining is enough for your market. Cotton shrinks, and a shaped skirt will show shrinkage as a change of silhouette rather than just as a shorter hem, so we control shrinkage before bulk cutting and compensate the pattern. Print registration, batch to batch shade and colour fastness are checked, lace trim is tested for scratchiness and for how it survives washing, and every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
