Modal and its relatives are the first risk. Modal drapes beautifully and feels expensive, but it is a cellulosic knit: it can shrink, it can grow when wet, and it is weaker when wet than a polyester knit. If you treat it like cotton you will get a dress that fits on the hanger and hangs differently after washing. We relax and pre-shrink before cutting, test shrinkage and recovery on the actual cloth, and check the garment after the care cycle rather than only off the line.

With only 3% elastane, recovery is doing the heavy lifting: it is what stops the dress bagging at the seat, the knee and the hem over a day of wear. We specify the yarn and the elastane brand rather than leaving it to the mill, and we test recovery after wear as well as after washing. The other decisions are yours and we would ask rather than assume: opacity in the colour you run, because lightweight modal jersey in a pale shade is a transparency risk; whether you want lining; and the care instruction, since a washable label is a real selling point for a dress like this and a dry clean label is a real cost to the customer.

Then the ordinary checks that decide whether a simple knit dress looks considered or cheap. Seams must stretch with the cloth or they pop, so stitch type is specified. A column dress shows every fitting fault, so the side seams have to hang straight and not twist, which is usually a sign the knit was not relaxed before cutting rather than a sewing fault. Hems are checked level after washing, pilling is tested, and every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
