The reference listing publishes exactly one size, labelled SS, with three numbers: body width 32 cm, strap length 19 cm, length 116 cm. Only the first row of the table above comes from that listing, and the rest is a grade we propose rather than a chart we inherited. Two readings of the width figure are possible and we would rather say so than pick silently. Thirty two centimetres read as a flat width across the bodice gives sixty four centimetres unstretched, which is narrow until you remember that smocking is designed to open, and how far it opens is precisely what has to be specified rather than assumed. Read the other way, as a width already taken at a comfortable stretch, it describes a small fitted bodice with very little expansion left.
