In production these are evening dresses in the modern direction. A sheath evening dress is straight and close, with a walking vent at the back and a lining that has to be cut a few millimetres shorter than the shell so it does not hang below the hem.

The modern reading is architectural: fewer trims, sharper seaming, and a print or a texture doing the work that beading used to do.

What Has To Be Specified

• Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the fit model. A Gulf 2XL is not a European 2XL.
• Care: dry-clean-only is normal here; if the trim cannot survive solvent, say so before the label is printed.
