In production these are satin evening dresses, cut in grey. Satin shows every needle mark and every bubble at the seam. Use a fine needle, a soft press cloth, and hang the dress for 24 hours before the final measurement. A sheath evening dress is straight and close, with a walking vent at the back and a lining that has to be cut a few millimetres shorter than the shell so it does not hang below the hem.

Grey is the quiet option and the one that shows a bad lining colour fastest. Match the lining to the shell, not to the trim.

What Has To Be Specified

• Shell: Satin, hand and weight approved on a physical swatch - imported evening cloth rarely matches a screen.
• Block: Sheath bodice, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
• Colour: Grey, with a lab dip approved against a physical swatch under both D65 and warm indoor light.
• Bodice structure: say whether the bodice is boned, fused, or soft. This single line decides the fit, the price and the packing.
• Lining: state bodice lining, skirt lining and whether the skirt is bagged out at the hem.
• Closure: name the type and position - invisible zip, lace-up back, or covered button placket.
• Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the fit model. A Gulf 2XL is not a European 2XL.
• Care: dry-clean-only is normal here; if the trim cannot survive solvent, say so before the label is printed.

Two rolls of the same colour name will not match. Buy one lot, keep a roll reference with the order, and cut the whole run from it.

Beading is quoted per panel and bought per gram. A 15% allowance sounds generous until the third size run lands.

Pressing decides the finish. Satin and taffeta take a needle mark in a second, and no amount of QC takes it out afterwards.
