Women's All Season Woven Kente African Peplum Top and Skirt
When a buyer asks us to develop “women's all season woven kente african peplum top and skirt”, the first conversation is never about price. It is about what the garment has to survive: a wedding season, a church calendar, a two-week festival run, or a shoot with eight hours of wear in it.
In practical terms this is a peplum top and skirt in kente cloth built for women, scheduled against all-season programmes. Kente is a hand-woven strip cloth, so width is fixed by the loom and the strips have to be joined. Weight and colour intensity vary from bolt to bolt, which makes a single-lot buy essential. A peplum top and skirt is sold as a set but fitted as two garments. The peplum has to break at the natural waist on every size, and the skirt waistband has to match it exactly.
The size run is the first commercial decision: a four-size run sells a test order, a ten-size run sells a container. An all-season programme only holds together if the shell is a stable, repeatable base cloth rather than a seasonal novelty.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: kente cloth, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: peplum top and skirt, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production
Kente is a hand-woven strip cloth, so width is fixed by the loom and the strips have to be joined. Weight and colour intensity vary from bolt to bolt, which makes a single-lot buy essential.
A peplum top and skirt is sold as a set but fitted as two garments. The peplum has to break at the natural waist on every size, and the skirt waistband has to match it exactly.
The hem is where a cheap build shows. A 3 cm hem with a clean catch-stitch reads expensive; a 1 cm overlocked hem reads fast fashion.
Grading is where the money disappears. Every detail that is placed by eye on the sample has to be measured on the pattern, or the size run drifts.
Two rolls of the same colour name will not match. Buy one lot, keep a roll reference with the order, and cut the whole run from it.
Options We Can Build To
- Closure: invisible zip, exposed zip, button placket or lace-up, each with its own sample requirement.
- Shell swap: the same block in a lighter or heavier version of the base cloth, priced separately.
- Trim: embroidered, beaded or plain, with the density quoted per panel rather than per garment.
- Lining: unlined, half-lined or fully lined — the last one changes the hand and the cost together.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
