Women's African Wrap Dress Long Sleeves
When a buyer asks us to develop “women's african wrap dress long sleeves”, the first conversation is never about price. It is about what the garment has to survive: a wedding season, a church calendar, a two-week festival run, or a shoot with eight hours of wear in it.
In practical terms this is a wrap dress in ankara wax print built for women. Ankara is a wax-printed cotton, normally 100-120 gsm. The hand is slightly crisp, so it holds a peplum, a pleat or a stand collar without much interlining, and it presses flat after a hot iron. A wrap dress closes with a tie or an internal button, which means the overlap depth is a fit variable, not a styling one. Get the overlap wrong and the dress opens in wear.
The size run is the first commercial decision: a four-size run sells a test order, a ten-size run sells a container.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: ankara wax print, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: wrap dress, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Detail: long sleeves. Long sleeves mean the cuff opening and the sleeve length both have to be agreed — a 2 cm difference is the difference between a bracelet sleeve and a full-length one.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Print placement is the quiet cost driver. Every seam that crosses the motif has to be planned in the marker, and that planning has to be repeated for each size.
Grading is where the money disappears. Every detail that is placed by eye on the sample has to be measured on the pattern, or the size run drifts.
The hem is where a cheap build shows. A 3 cm hem with a clean catch-stitch reads expensive; a 1 cm overlocked hem reads fast fashion.
Options We Can Build To
- Trim: embroidered, beaded or plain, with the density quoted per panel rather than per garment.
- Detail variations on the long sleeves: scaled up, scaled down, or replaced with a plain panel at a lower price point.
- Sizing: a four-size test run, a standard eight-size run, or a graded run to your own spec sheet.
- Shell swap: the same block in a lighter or heavier version of the base cloth, priced separately.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
