• Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
• Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
• Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Grading is where the money disappears. Every detail that is placed by eye on the sample has to be measured on the pattern, or the size run drifts.
