Men's African Headwrap Gele Set Mermaid-Hem
Most requests we quote against “men's african headwrap gele set mermaid hem” arrive with a photo, a target price and very little else. The photo is the easy part; the specification is where the money is saved or lost.
In practical terms this is a mermaid-hem dress in ankara wax print built for men. Ankara is a wax-printed cotton, normally 100-120 gsm. The hand is slightly crisp, so it holds a peplum, a pleat or a stand collar without much interlining, and it presses flat after a hot iron. A mermaid hem adds a flare at the very bottom of an otherwise straight body. It is the cheapest way to get drama into a column dress, and the hardest hem to finish cleanly.
Menswear in this category is a different block entirely — a straighter shoulder, a longer body and a trouser rise that has nothing in common with the women's range.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: ankara wax print, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: mermaid-hem dress, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Detail: a matching headwrap. The headwrap is cut from the same lot as the garment and finished on all four edges; if it is a separate SKU it still has to be photographed with the dress.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

A mermaid hem adds a flare at the very bottom of an otherwise straight body. It is the cheapest way to get drama into a column dress, and the hardest hem to finish cleanly.
Trims are quoted per piece and bought per roll. A 15% trim allowance sounds generous until the third size run lands.
Grading is where the money disappears. Every detail that is placed by eye on the sample has to be measured on the pattern, or the size run drifts.
The hem is where a cheap build shows. A 3 cm hem with a clean catch-stitch reads expensive; a 1 cm overlocked hem reads fast fashion.
Options We Can Build To
