Plus-Size African Peplum Top and Skirt Mermaid-Hem
Most requests we quote against “plus size african peplum top and skirt mermaid hem” arrive with a photo, a target price and very little else. The photo is the easy part; the specification is where the money is saved or lost.
In practical terms this is a mermaid-hem dress in ankara wax print built for plus-size buyers. Ankara is a wax-printed cotton, normally 100-120 gsm. The hand is slightly crisp, so it holds a peplum, a pleat or a stand collar without much interlining, and it presses flat after a hot iron. A mermaid hem adds a flare at the very bottom of an otherwise straight body. It is the cheapest way to get drama into a column dress, and the hardest hem to finish cleanly.
Plus sizes are not a scaled-up straight size — the bust dart, the armhole and the waist drop all have to be redrawn, and the sample has to be fitted on a real body.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: ankara wax print, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: mermaid-hem dress, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production
Ankara is a wax-printed cotton, normally 100-120 gsm. The hand is slightly crisp, so it holds a peplum, a pleat or a stand collar without much interlining, and it presses flat after a hot iron.
A mermaid hem adds a flare at the very bottom of an otherwise straight body. It is the cheapest way to get drama into a column dress, and the hardest hem to finish cleanly.
Grading is where the money disappears. Every detail that is placed by eye on the sample has to be measured on the pattern, or the size run drifts.
The hem is where a cheap build shows. A 3 cm hem with a clean catch-stitch reads expensive; a 1 cm overlocked hem reads fast fashion.
The first sample usually passes on the mannequin and fails on a body: the waist sits high, the armhole cuts, or the sweep is 4 cm short. Fit on a real model before you approve anything.
Options We Can Build To
- Packing: flat-fold with tissue, hanger-ready, or individual polybag with a branded insert.
- Lining: unlined, half-lined or fully lined — the last one changes the hand and the cost together.
- Sizing: a four-size test run, a standard eight-size run, or a graded run to your own spec sheet.
- Packing: flat-fold with tissue, hanger-ready, or individual polybag with a branded insert.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
