Traditional Wedding African Cape Dress
Most requests we quote against “traditional wedding african cape dress” arrive with a photo, a target price and very little else. The photo is the easy part; the specification is where the money is saved or lost.
In practical terms this is a cape dress in ankara wax print built for women, aimed at a traditional wedding. Ankara is a wax-printed cotton, normally 100-120 gsm. The hand is slightly crisp, so it holds a peplum, a pleat or a stand collar without much interlining, and it presses flat after a hot iron. A cape dress pairs a fitted body with a cape that falls from the shoulder or the neckline. The armhole has to be cut so the cape moves independently of the arm.
The size run is the first commercial decision: a four-size run sells a test order, a ten-size run sells a container. Traditional weddings run long and photographers shoot from every angle, so the lining, the seat seam and the underarm finish all get seen.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: ankara wax print, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: cape dress, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Two rolls of the same colour name will not match. Buy one lot, keep a roll reference with the order, and cut the whole run from it.

Trims are quoted per piece and bought per roll. A 15% trim allowance sounds generous until the third size run lands.
