Kente Cloth African Clothing Cape Dress
Most requests we quote against “kente cloth african clothing cape dress” arrive with a photo, a target price and very little else. The photo is the easy part; the specification is where the money is saved or lost.
In practical terms this is a cape dress in kente cloth built for women. Kente is a hand-woven strip cloth, so width is fixed by the loom and the strips have to be joined. Weight and colour intensity vary from bolt to bolt, which makes a single-lot buy essential. A cape dress pairs a fitted body with a cape that falls from the shoulder or the neckline. The armhole has to be cut so the cape moves independently of the arm.
The size run is the first commercial decision: a four-size run sells a test order, a ten-size run sells a container.
What Has To Be Specified
- Shell: kente cloth, weight and hand approved on a physical swatch, not on a screen.
- Block: cape dress, fitted on a real model at the middle size before grading.
- Colour: name the colourway and give a reference swatch. “African print” is not a colour; a lab dip checked under D65 and TL84 is.
- Lining: state unlined, half-lined or fully lined. This single line changes the hand, the packing and the cost.
- Closure: name the type and the position. “Back zip” is not a specification; “invisible zip, CB, 55 cm, self-fabric guard” is.
- Sizing: give the size run, the grade rule and the target fit model. A four-size test and a ten-size container run are two different projects.
- Trim and hardware: bead, cord, eyelet or feather, with a colour reference and a pull-strength requirement for anything on a children's style.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production
Kente is a hand-woven strip cloth, so width is fixed by the loom and the strips have to be joined. Weight and colour intensity vary from bolt to bolt, which makes a single-lot buy essential.
A cape dress pairs a fitted body with a cape that falls from the shoulder or the neckline. The armhole has to be cut so the cape moves independently of the arm.
The first sample usually passes on the mannequin and fails on a body: the waist sits high, the armhole cuts, or the sweep is 4 cm short. Fit on a real model before you approve anything.
Trims are quoted per piece and bought per roll. A 15% trim allowance sounds generous until the third size run lands.
The hem is where a cheap build shows. A 3 cm hem with a clean catch-stitch reads expensive; a 1 cm overlocked hem reads fast fashion.
Options We Can Build To
- Packing: flat-fold with tissue, hanger-ready, or individual polybag with a branded insert.
- Closure: invisible zip, exposed zip, button placket or lace-up, each with its own sample requirement.
- Shell swap: the same block in a lighter or heavier version of the base cloth, priced separately.
- Trim: embroidered, beaded or plain, with the density quoted per panel rather than per garment.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
